The Fratellis attack Pete Doherty

0

“Pete Doherty is a degenerate waste of space” and a “junkie”according to Glaswegian band, and Uncut faves, The Fratellis. A Top 5 single “Chelsea Dagger” and Number 2 album “Costello Music” are earning the three-piece comparisons with Supergrass and The Libertines. Unfortunately, there is little good feeling between The Libs and The Frats. In fact, bassist Barry Fratelli says, “People should check out The Clash if they want a band to believe in,” adding: "Doherty's just a junkie.” In this issue of Uncut, The Fratellis also reveal that they had a spat with another, even more legendary, Pete earlier this year, at T in Park. To find out about their argument, get the latest issue, in shops now. In other Libs-related news, Carl Barat reveals to Uncut how he and Pete Doherty used to write songs when they were bandmates. He says their “personal feelings would fuse together and a story would emerge. I remember lying on my back drunk with the guitar and Pete had some chords and he would be saying, ‘Come on, come on.’”

Speaking on Wainwright's website, Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody said, “When I was writing the song, I pictured this sorceress with a real darkness inside her, and then when you meet her, yes, there is that wicked side to her, but there also is this sweetness as well." Currently Radio One’s single of the week, "Set Fire To The Third Bar" isn't released in the UK until November 13, although it can be found on Snow Patrol's 2006 million-selling fourth album, "Eyes Open". Martha will be appearing with Snow Patrol tonight (October 6, 10.35pm) on Jonathan Ross' BBC One show, performing the single live. Wainwright is currently writing new material for the follow-up to her excellent 2005 self-titled debut album, due to be released next year. She has also made several contributions alongside brother, Rufus Wainwright to “Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man”, a tribute compilation available now. Meanwhile, Snow Patrol are the latest British guitar band to crack the notoriously difficult US charts. They are currently at number five with the single, “Chasing Cars.” Pic credit: Tom Soter

JOE STRUMMER’S SIDEKICKS FORM BAND

0

Last night, Uncut witnessed the live return of two former cohorts of Joe Strummer. Anthony Genn and Martin Slattery, once members of Strummer's Mescaleros, now work as The Hours, newly signed to a revived A&M Records. Although this is the first band they have fronted, the pair have previously worked with and produced albums for diverse artists including Strummer, Pulp (Genn was an early member), Elastica, Brian Eno, Grace Jones and Black Grape. Genn also achieved notoriety by running onstage naked during a performance by Elastica at Glastonbury in 1995. The hotly-tipped Hours, backed by a 4-piece band, played a 6 song set of anthemic but lyrically dark pop - reminiscent of Travis, Oasis and Coldplay - to a packed crowd at the Water Rats, London. They finished the set with forthcoming debut single, “Ali In The Jungle.” Talking of their past musical lives, Genn says “ We have been in groups with the greatest British poets: Shaun Ryder, Jarvis Cocker and Joe Strummer. So, I always told myself, unless you’ve got something to say, don’t even step towards that mic.” Endorsement for their collaboration has come from Damien Hirst - who designed their artwork - and Genn’s ex bandmate in Pulp, Jarvis Cocker. “They understand what music is for – it’s for human beings to communicate with other human beings. It’s that simple, it’s that important," says Jarvis. "Let them into your life. You won’t regret it.” The pair also figure on Jarvis' forthcoming debut solo album, released on November 14. “Ali In The Jungle” is released on November 6. “Narcissus Road” the debut album will be released by A&M Records in January. www.myspace.com/thehours

RARE RECORD SHOP TO CLOSE

Reddington’s, a collectors’ record shop, is closing down after 40 years' trading, citing as causes spiraling overheads and the increasing dominance of the internet. Owner Dan Reddington says the choice of records available on sites such as Ebay make running a shop impossible. He told the Birmingham Post, “If you search The Beatles or Elvis you are going to get more than 10,000 [results] and we just cannot compete with that.” The much-loved Birmingham record shop is a collectors’ paradise with a back catalogue of more than 100,000 records. The shop has helped many a local rocker find the vinyl they’ve long been searching for. Local musicians and supporters of the shop just happen to be Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant, Black Sabbath’s Geoff Nicholl’s and E.L.O.’s Bev Bevan. Plant, on hearing of the store’s closure, popped in to pass on his best wishes to owner Dan Reddington - he's been shopping there for rare blues, rockabilly and rock'n'roll records for years. This is the second recent incident involving Plant helping out in his local community, following the story, reported last week on www.uncut.co.uk, that he is to help his neighbour raise cash for an operation. A musical show, an homage based on the Reddington’s shop, will take place at the Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham in November 2007. Bev Bevan has been confirmed to play. Live appearances by other musicians that have shopped there are also likely. Reddington Records are still trading via their website(s). The Hold Steady are currently the most hotly tipped band in the U.S, gaining rave reviews in everything from Rolling Stone to Newsweek. The five-piece band comprise: Craig Finn (vocals), Tad Kubler (guitar), Franz Nicolay (keys), Galen Polivka (bass) and Bobby Drake (drums) They make quality rock’n’roll, a bit like Thin Lizzy playing Jonathan Richman songs or AC/DC riffing through Springsteen’s ‘Born To Run’. So you can see why we like them. The Hold Steady finally release their UK debut single, ‘Chips Ahoy!’, which tells the tale of a guy, a girl and a horse in a way only Craig Finn can. "I've got a girl, she don't have to work/ She can tell which horse is gonna finish first/Some nights the painkillers make the pain even worse… She put $900 on the 5th horse in the 6th race/I think its name was Chips Ahoy!/Came in 6 lengths ahead/We spent the whole next week getting high." ‘Chips Ahoy’ is out on very limited 7" vinyl on November 13. The Hold Steady’s album ‘Boys And Girls In America’, produced by John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr), is released by Vagrant in January. http://www.theholdsteady.com/

Pete Doherty finds his poetic identity

0

Babyshambles leader and ex-Libertine Pete Doherty has chosen to read English war poet Siegfried Sassoon’s ‘Suicide In The Trenches’ for a programme to mark National Poetry Day tomorrow. This year’s theme is ‘identity’. ‘Poetry: From Pete Doherty to Andrew Motion’ will air on Artsworld, a Sky channel, tomorrow, Friday October 5, in the evening. As well as Doherty and Motion, the programme will also feature stand-up poet Luke Wright and actor Omid Djalli. They were all asked to pick a poem that reflected a part of themselves. Doherty commented on his personal reasons for choosing ‘Suicide In The Trenches: “I chose the poem because my old man was always in the uniform, because he was in the army; he’d come and go wherever - Bosnia, Ireland – all over the place,” he said, comparing live performance to being in the trenches. “Getting onstage, we wanted to be in the front line…” Doherty also recites excerpts of his own work such as ‘La Belle et La Bête’ and ‘Hooray for the 21st Century.’ Often overlooked amid the paparazzi scrum, Doherty’s poetry won him the opportunity to work with The British Council in Russia, aged just 16. He is also a published poet whose work can be found in the underground publications 'Rising Poets' and 'Full Moon Empty Sports Bag'.
