Lou Reed Speaks Out Against War

0

Lou Reed was one of several musicians who spoke out against the war in Iraq, at a tribute concert for the United Nation’s new secretary general, Ban Ki-Moon. The founder of the Velvet Underground, said it was impossible to “be silent” about the current war situation, and called for “US troops to be pulled out of Iraq.” Lou Reed is long-term supporter of human rights group Amnesty International, and took part in the 1986 'Conspiracy of Hope' rock concert with U2 and Peter Gabriel. Pat Methany, Grammy-winning guitarist also appeared at the concert in the General Assembly hall on Friday (February 2). He too, read a statement about the difficulty of dealing with current worldwide problems including the “cosmic shifts of global warming” and the “microscopic HIV virus.”

Ringo Starr To Present Brit Award To Oasis

0

Former Beatle Ringo Starr will reportedly be the guest presenter of the Brit Award for “Outstanding Achievement” to Oasis, at the ceremony taking place next week. As previously reported, Oasis are due to close the Brit Awards ceremony on February 14, although Oasis’ Noel Gallagher has already stated that their performance will be “nothing special". Rumours have it that Johnny Depp was due to present Oasis with their award, but the choice of Starr is much more logical, considering The Beatles’ influence on Oasis. Plus, their drummer, Zak Starkey is Ringo’s son, making it a truly family affair! Noel Gallgher, meanwhile, has announced that he will headline two concerts at the Royal Albert Hall as part of The Teenage Cancer Trust series. He plays acoustic and ‘with friends’ on March 26 and 27. For more details about this years Teenage Cancer Trust concerts, click here

Kevin Rowland’s debut DJ set went down a storm at celebrated indie-pop club How Does It Feel To Be Loved? at the Canterbury Arms, Brixton, on Friday night. (February 2). HDIF’s main man, Ian Watson, said that Rowland’s star turntable turn was full of memorable moments. His personal highlight was soundchecking with Kevin: “He's set "Young Americans" by David Bowie playing, and is singing into the mic I borrowed from Brixton boy Fruitbat. And he sounds spectacular. That voice you know so well from any number of classic Dexys songs, belting out "Alright! Young Americans, Young Americans..." Rowland ended his set with The Stooges “No Fun,” by which point everybody was dancing – even Uncut! Rowland's appearance marks the start of a hectic month for HDIF. This Friday (February 9) the club features Butcher Boy, the first band signed to the HDIF label. The Scottish seven piece, who have been compared to The Smiths by The Guardian and Belle & Sebastian by Pitchfork, will be promoting their debut single, "Girls Make Me Sick". Van Halen Confirm Reunion

0

US rock veterans Van Halen have announced that they will regroup for a 40-date North American tour this summer. Even the group’s original singer David Lee Roth has returned to the band, for the first time officially since 1984. In a statement on van-halen.com, the group have promised a greatest hits tour, “featuring a set list of the most iconic hits ever produced by America’s premiere rock band”. Guitarist and founder Eddie Van Halen has also stated his joy at the band’s official reunion, saying, "I am very excited to get back to the core of what made Van Halen." The band are notorious for changing their vocalist. They have recorded studio albums with three different singers since 1978 – Roth, Sammy Hagar and Gary Cherone – and each of them have left the group under murky circumstances only to return, at least once, over the last two decades. Van Halen had their most successful era between 1978 and 1984, with the vocal talents of Roth. Monster hits include the anthemic “Jump”, “Why Can’t This Be Love?” and “Runnin With The Devil.” The group also pioneered several new techniques in playing and recording guitar sounds. Van Halen himself has also confirmed that Wolfgang, his 15-year old son, is now the band’s bassist, replacing the departing Michael Anthony. Details for the extensive tour will be made available soon. Currently it is unclear if Van Halen will play any dates in Europe. Their reunion tour is anticipated to be one of the most in-demand of the year, alongside tours from Genesis and The Police. Van Halen are due to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 12. To go to Van Halen's official website, click here

Humanitarian award to make Clint’s day

Iconic actor and Oscar-winning director Clint Eastwood is to be honoured with the Jack Valenti Humanitarian Award from the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) next Tuesday (February 6). The director of modern classics “Mystic River” and “Million Dollar Baby” is the first individual to receive the award, which aims to honour “work that has reached out in a positive and respectful approach to all countries”. MPAA chairman Dan Glickman said that the 76-year old has “for decades” exemplified "decency and goodness of spirit in his moviemaking". Glickman also praised Eastwood’s two 2006 releases, “Flags of Our Fathers” and the Oscar-nominated “Letters from Iwo Jima”, Uncut’s Film Of The Month for January. “These [two] films exemplify the true power of movies to tell human stories and inspire national conversation,” said Glickman. Eastwood will receive the accolade during a private dinner, which will conclude with a first-of-its-kind industry symposium, The Business of Show Business. The Jack Valenti Humanitarian Award is named after the Jack Valenti, chief of the MPAA for 38 years until his retirement in 2004. Valenti also helped to choose Eastwood as the inaugural recipient.

No details are available as to the sound of “Guitar” but that hasn’t stopped some fans speculating. See Pink Floyd Rock The Ruins At Pompeii

Every day, we bring you the best thing we've seen on YouTube - a great piece of archive footage, a music promo or a clip from one of our favourite movies or TV shows. Today: Watch classic footage from Pink Floyd’s 1972 film “Live at Pompeii”. Here the prog megastars perform “Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun” from their masterful second album “A Saucerful of Secrets.” “Live At Pompeii” shows the Floyd perform six songs at the ruins of an ancient amphitheatre in Italy, in October 1971. However, only three of the tracks were actually filmed on site: “Set The Controls…” along with “Careful With That Axe, Eugene” and “Mademoiselle Nobs” were actually filmed in a Paris studio, using “blue screen” technology to insert the Pompeii background at a later date. Browned Off With James Brown

There’s a new twist in the controversy over James Brown’s recent death. Fourth wife Tomi Rae Hynie has asked a court for permission to return to the singer’s estate in South Carolina to collect “personal possessions” that belong to herself and their five-year-old son. Hynie is not legally Brown’s wife, as she wasn’t divorced from her first husband when she married Brown in December 2001. After Hynie annulled her first marriage, she and Brown failed to remarry to make it legal. Robert Rosen, Hynie’s attorney, says: “She's not asking the court to live there. They locked her out and wouldn't let her in, but she has a right to go in and get her stuff – furniture, her clothing, her son's toys. They keep saying that they're going to do it but they never do it, so we're going to ask a judge to order them to do it.” James Brown died from heart failure on December 25, 2006.

Linkin Park Go Back To Basics For Third Album

LA rockers Linkin Park have announced that they are into the mixing stages of their third studio album. The follow-up to 2003’s hugely successful “Meteora” is as yet untitled, but the band’s co-front man Chester Bennington has been telling us what we can expect from the new material. The album, co-produced by legend Rick Rubin – whose many credits include The Beastie Boys, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Johnny Cash’s “American” series – is apparently going to be a much darker and calmer affair than on previous records. “Rick has brought more of a stripped down, classic-rock and hip-hop kind of feel. We're using vintage guitars and drums made out of wood and skin for a more tribal sound. It's definitely not nu-metal," said Bennington. A new single, also not yet named, will precede the album, though dates for both have yet to be set, they are both expected in the coming months. The Grammy award-winning band also announced this week that they will headline this year’s Download Festival, Donington Park on June 9. Click here for more artist news

Roger Daltrey: “Yeast tea keeps me rocking”

0

Roger Daltry has announced details of his seventh annual series of concerts in aid of The Teenage Cancer Trust – and The Who will be headlining the final show at the Royal Albert Hall on March 31. In an interview with Virgin Radio, Daltrey – who originally had the idea for the concerts – also revealed the secret ingredient to his seemingly endless appetite for rock: a nice cuppa. Daltrey says that he likes to drink tea made from yeast and Kombucha – that’s bacteria that resembles a mushroom, discovered in China 2000 years ago during the Qin Dynasty. It was originally thought to help the user to gain immortality. He claims tea has helped him cope with The Who’s worldwide touring commitments. He told listeners: "It's things like Kombucha – and anything to keep you going. The shows are easy, it's the schlepping that gets hard." He did however reiterate that he still loves performing with Townshend and co: "To be doing it at my age, this is brilliant. You know, I could be going and working at some car factory or some call centre… that would drive me insane." Speaking about the forthcoming concerts at the Royal Albert Hall, the singer praised the current scene: “It’s the healthiest it's been since the ’60s. The quality of the music and the originality of the songwriting is fantastic." Other performers headlining concerts in aid of The Teenage Cancer Trust include Noel Gallagher, Kasabian and Russell Brand. The View and The Coral are also confirmed to play, with many other acts yet to be announced. The concerts start on March 26. The Eagles Fly Again

Legendary Cali country-rockers The Eagles are to put out a new studio album, almost 30 years since 1979’s “The Long Run”. “It’s coming out in 60-90 days, if we don’t kill each other first,” explains founding member Don Henley to Billboard magazine. He said "We want to get it out before the summer. We've had a few interruptions. We've had a few distractions. We've had several". The studio album has been in production since 2003 and Henley has explained why it's been taking its time. he said: "Some days it feels good. Some days it's challenging. It's exhilarating. It's worrisome. It's joyous. It's all of these things. It's a big mixed emotions kind of thing. It always has been. It's no different from what it ever is. It's just that there are more distractions now with families and charities and lawsuits". Since the end of their extended sabbatical, the band have regularly played live gigs together and have released two live albums. The new studio LP is tentatively titled “The Long Road To Eden” and band members include Henley, Glenn Frey, Joe Walsh and Timothy B Schmit. Walsh joined the group on guitar in 1976 as Bernie Leadon's replacement and Schmit took over bass duties following the departure of Randy Meisner in 1977. The Eagles were inducted into The Rock’N’Roll Hall Of Fame in 1998.

Listen To First New Dexys Song In 21 Years

The first demo from the long-awaited fourth Dexys Midnight Runners album, “It’s Ok Joanna”, is now available on the web. You can access the track – which has a classic Dexys feel – from frontman Kevin Rowland’s official Myspace page. Dexys’ previous album, “Don’t Stand Me Down”, was released way back in 1986 – after which Rowland decided it was time to call it quits. Rowland reformed Dexys in 2003 for an acclaimed sell-out tour, and a message to fans on his Myspace page claims that it was this positive response that convinced the band to reform. The message reads: “In 2003, Dexys were at last reinvented for a critically acclaimed and rapturously received tour. Again, it wasn’t a greatest hits tour, and many of the ideas approaches that were received with bewilderment in 1985 were employed again. But this time, those ideas were understood and very warmly welcomed. The world had caught up with us.” As well as new music, Rowland is also working on his first book, and his message online ends on a upbeat note: “2007 could be a good year for fans of Kevin and Dexys.” Listen to first new Dexys’ material in 21 years by clicking here now

Beach Boys legal battle continues

0

Founding members of the Beach Boys, Mike Love and Al Jardine, are awaiting another trial date in the long-running dispute over who owns The Beach Boys’ name. The law seems to favour Love: Superior Court Judge James Dunn ruled this week that there is enough evidence for him to fight Jardine’s claim that he can use name. The legal battle started back in 2001, when Jardine filed against Love because he felt excluded from Beach Boys’ concerts that same year. The original complaint was dismissed, but in 2003 Love then attempted to sue Jardine for his use of variations on the band’s name, such as “Beach Boys Family & Friends” and “Al Jardine of The Beach Boys”. Jardine now calls his group Al Jardine’s Endless Summer Band. Although Love’s legal action was dismissed, he has been permitted to continue seeking $2 million of court costs – and $1 million in earnings. This week’s ruling this week in favour of Love means the battle for the Beach Boys brand will surely continue for some time. Love is still adamant that only he has legal rights to use that name.

Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush – and a kitchen table!

Every day, we bring you the best thing we've seen on YouTube - a great piece of archive footage, a music promo or a clip from one of our favourite movies or TV shows. Today: Watch a classic TV performance by Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush from 1979. The couple performed a frankly weird cover version of Roy Harper’s “Another Day” on Kate’s Christmas TV special from that year. The duet was even discussed as a possible single release – but as all keen pop historians know, that never happened. Kate later contributed vocals to Peter Gabriel’s 1986 single “Don’t Give Up.” That duet was a huge success, spending 11 weeks in the UK singles chart. For added ‘watchability’, check out the chemistry between Gabriel and Bush as they ‘act’ out the lyrics of the song, including touching arms across a shoddy-looking kitchen table. Sexy stuff.
