Beirut readies ‘Gulag Orkestar’ follow-up

Indie-folk group Beirut have revealed details of their new album, set for release this October. "The Flying Club Cup", the speedy follow-up to last year’s debut, "Gulag Orkestar", will be supported by a handful of UK dates. Released on October 8, the album moves away from the Balkan folk leanings of their debut and embraces more Western European influences, including traditional French music. Speaking to Pitchfork about the making of "The Flying Club Cup", Condon said: “I was listening to a lot of Jacques Brel and French chanson music, pop songs shrouded in big, glorious, over-the-top arrangements and all this drama. [I was] very much throwing myself into the world of classical pop music.” The tracklisting for the album is: "A Call to Arms" "Nantes" "A Sunday Smile" "Guyamas Sonora" "La Banlieu" "Cliquot" "The Penalty" "Forks and Knives (La Fête)" "In the Mausoleum" "Un Dernier Verre (Pour la Route)" "Cherbourg" "St. Apollonia" "The Flying Club Cup" Beirut will return to the UK to play the following shows: Manchester Club Academy (November 6) Glasgow Arches (7) Leeds Irish Centre (8) Cardiff The Point (9) London Roundhouse (10)

Six Organs Of Admittance live

0

I could be mistaken about this, but there's a point in this really fine Six Organs Of Admittance show when Ben Chasny and his new foil, Elisa Ambrogio, appear to be whispering sweet nothings to each other. Then the hushed, gentle duet becomes clearer. "They may even eat the horse that you're riding," they're singing. As far as I know, I think this is a new song from the next Six Organs album due in November. On this evidence, it's going to be quite a departure. Chasny is too much of an adventurer and shit-stirrer to stick with the acid-folk formula which he'd perfected before most people had woken up to it. Tonight's support act, Hush Arbors, actually do a pretty good job of sounding like Chasny circa "Dust And Chimes" or "Dark Noontide", though they're also capable of some billowing white noise + effete melody hybrids like the one they close with. Six Organs, though, are moving on. Chasny's incantatory singing has got stronger and while he's still playing elaborate, opulent tunes, like an electrified Bert Jansch at times, it's the way he intersects with Ambrogio that's so radical and thrilling. Ambrogio's performance fronting The Magik Markers on their new "Boss" album (reviewed here) has been exciting us here in the office for the past few weeks. As half of the reconfigured Six Organs, she quietly harmonises with Chasny, then, while he carves labyrinthine folkish figures on his guitar, she lets fly these quite astonishing no-wave solos: great sustained clangs and skronks, punctuated by cavernous silences, that are at once free and fiercely controlled. It makes for quite a spectacle, not least because Ambrogio rocks out in such an intense and passionate way. Headbanging in slow motion, shredding her strings one by one, she acts as a magnetic force, drawing Chasny towards her into a series of erotic guitar duels, until they're facing off against each other, rocking backwards and forwards in perfect sync, finding a cacophonous and beautiful common ground in their playing. The whole thing is very charged and I'm struggling to think of anything I can adequately compare it with. I suppose Sonic Youth have hit this sort of vibe occasionally, but it's the intimacy of the pair which is so striking, the sense that you're watching something very private but also something which has a keen understanding of primal rock theatre. For an encore, they make a brackish avant-blues jam out of, of all things, Fleetwood Mac's "That's Alright", wryly positing themselves as the New Weird America's Buckingham and Nicks. Cute, and awesome.

Countdown To V: Kanye West

0

This weekend (August 18-19) sees the twelfth V Festival take place in Chelmsford and Staffordshire. There’s a fantastic selection of music on offer at V, from classic veterans to buzzing new bands, which we at Uncut will be previewing every day in the run up to the festival. Far from the misogynistic template of much contemporary hip hop, Kanye West is a man with ambition – and not just ambition to own the biggest houses and the flashest cars. His songs tackle deep topics, including the plight of child diamond miners, and he’s often spoken out for gay and black rights. Don’t expect empty posturing at his V set – there’ll be intelligent lyrics and cutting edge beats alongside the de rigeur showbiz glamour. West will no doubt be previewing tracks from his forthcoming third album, ”Graduation”, which, if you needed any more convincing, his mother believes is his best yet. It’s going to be quite a show. Other performers at V include Primal Scream, Foo Fighters, Manic Street Preachers, The Coral, Babyshambles and Jarvis Cocker. Uncut will be blogging from V Festival all weekend bringing you updates from the action, so take a look at Uncut’s festival blog this weekend (August 18-19).

Cut Of The Day: Tuesday August 14 Today's YouTube clip sees an amazing performance of "Misfit Love" by Queens Of The Stone Age on "The Henry Rollins Show". The sound quality, as with all performances on Rollins' show, is extremely clear and the band, led by Josh Homme, is on top form. "Misfit Love", originally from the group's recent album "Era Vulgaris", is a return of sorts to the 'robot rock' of their self-titled debut album. Edinburgh Film Festival — the pre-blog!

0

Tomorrow, I'm off to the Edinburgh Film Festival. I've got loads of fond memories of previous years -- many of them, I have to admit, caught up in Scotland's marvellous, forward-thinking policy towards pub opening times -- but this year's festival promises a bundle of fine films. I'm particularly looking forward to seeing I'm A Cyborg But That's OK -- a rom-com as only Oldboy director Chan Park-wook can deliver -- Gus Van Sant's Paranoid Park, and something called Ex-Drummer, about three drug-addled, disabled punk rock musicians' search for a drummer. There's a flavour on a previous Edinburgh blog of what else to expect this year. Oh, and if I have time I'll slip off to the other festival to catch Nicholas Parsons' Happy Hour. As a huge fan of Radio 4's Just A Minute, I can't wait to see the great man live. But, of course -- film comes first, and I'll be blogging at least once a day from tomorrow through to the weekend, about what I've seen, what parties I've blagged into, and all the latest news and gossip from the Royal Mile.

Sunburned Hand Of The Man meet Four Tet, plus PJ Harvey, Robert Forster and “I Bloodbrother Be”

0

As I've mentioned before here, the marketing department next door aren't too fond of the primordial swamp jams that come out of the New Weird America, and for the past couple of weeks they've been particularly aggravated by the new album by Sunburned Hand Of The Man. To my ears, though, "Fire Escape" is by far the most accessible album I've come across by this productive and frequently unhinged collective from Massachusetts. Compared with the last Sunburned album which came my way, "Z" on Ecstatic Peace, this is a pop record. I exaggerate, of course. But still, most of Sunburned's copious catalogue consists of sprawling freak-outs recorded in their attic and released by themselves on CDR. "Fire Escape", on the other hand, is a slick and formal product. It's coming out on Oslo's excellent Smalltown Supersound label, with a sleeve designed by EYE from the sainted Boredoms. Most importantly, it's been produced - in a proper studio, no less - by Kieran Hebden, the London producer and musician who's best known for his largely electronic work as Four Tet. Hebden has great and eclectic taste, and he's set about recording and mixing Sunburned pretty fearlessly. For a start, he's hacked down a fair bit of the undergrowth that traditionally surrounds the band, without - amazingly - compromising their quicksilver free spirits. On "Fire Escape" you can hear every last rustle and clank, from the spirited percussive ambles through to a spray of trumpet supplied I think, by Vibracathedral Orchestra's Michael Flower, whose duets album with Chris Corsano (another sometime Sunburned member) I raved about here. The trumpet is pitched somewhere between "On The Corner"-era Miles and the voluntaries of a dying elephant. This, I suspect, is what marketing have most issues with. I think it's great, of course. Most importantly, Hebden understands that Sunburned's secret weapon is bassist Rob Thomas, whose heavy, funky lines bring all the wayward jams into sharp focus. It's here that Sunburned's potency as a groove band becomes really apparent (as anyone who's seen them live will testify). Beyond the drum circles, improv psych and shamanic moaning, they're at their best when they recall Funkadelic or Can. Their best record, anyway, since "Jaybird", and maybe their best ever. Neophytes should definitely start here. A few quick things. A serendipitous bit of iPod shuffling yesterday fetched up something from the new PJ Harvey album next to "Mrs Bartolozzi" by Kate Bush. I think I mentioned Bush in my original review of "White Chalk" here, but the correlation between some of these songs and the piano tracks on disc one of "Aerial" is quite striking, I think. Secondly, here's a fascinating review I was sent of Robert Forster's long-awaited return. I'm sure all old Go-Betweens fans will be delighted by this news. And finally, kudos to Andrew Weatherall for his "Sci-Fi-Lo-Fi" mix CD which, amongst many tracks by sinister men with quiffs down the ages (oh, the new Gallon Drunk album is good, too), features "I Bloodbrother Be" by The Shockheaded Peters, sounding as lusty and fresh as it did on the Peel programme what, 25 years ago now?

Countdown To V: Foo Fighters

There’s a fantastic selection of music on offer at V, from classic veterans to buzzing newer bands, which we at Uncut will be previewing every day in the run up to the festival. Main stage headliners Foo Fighters rose out of the ashes of Nirvana in 1995 with their self-titled collection of Grohl's demos, an endearingly scrappy collection of grungy pop songs. Since then, the band have steadily moved closer to classic rock territory, maturing into a band who know their way around both a punishing riff and a timeless melody. While albums like “One By One”, “The Colour And The Shape” and “There Is Nothing Left To Lose” have their spectacular moments, it’s in the live arena that Foo Fighters really shine, blending their razor-sharp hooks with rock theatrics and a healthy dose of humour. Expect more hits at their V set than you ever realised they had, including “Everlong”, “Learn To Fly”, “Best Of You”, “Monkey Wrench” and “All My Life”. The ultimate guilty rock pleasure, you'd be hard pressed to find a better live band on the bill. Other performers at V include Primal Scream, Kanye West, Manic Street Preachers, The Coral, Babyshambles and Jarvis Cocker. The Fiery Furnaces unveil ‘Widow City’

0

Brother and sister duo The Fiery Furnaces have announced the release of their fifth album proper, “Widow City”. The album, out October 15, is the follow up to 2006’s “Bitter Tea”, and once again sees Matthew Friedberger play all instruments except for the drums. Recorded on the shores of Lake Michigan, “Widow City” was also produced by Matthew Friedberger and features tracks including “Ex-Guru” and “My Egyptian Grammar”. A performance of new song "Japanese Slippers" can be found on YouTube. While “Bitter Tea” heavily utilised the tack piano prevalent in honky-tonk music, “Widow City” similarly relies on the Chamberlain, a relative of the Mellotron, to provide the bedrock for many of the tracks. The tracklisting is as follows: “The Philadelphia Grand Jury” “Duplexes Of The Dead” “Automatic Husband” “Ex-Guru” “Clear Signal From Cairo” “My Egyptian Grammar” “The Old Hag Is Sleeping” “Japanese Slippers” “Navy Nurse” “Uncle Charlie” “Right By Conquest” “Restorative Beer” “Wicker Whatnots” “Cabaret Of The Seven Devils” “Pricked In The Heart” “Widow City”

Scorsese: filming Stones was “cathartic experience”

0

Martin Scorsese has spoken in depth about the making of his forthcoming Rolling Stones live film, “Shine A Light”, describing the shooting as “a cathartic experience”. The director said: “In my mind, I did this film 40 years ago. It just happened to get around to being filmed right now. “In “Shine A Light”, the Stones are still immediate. They still are as young as the Sixties. In my mind, “Shine A Light” is something that's still of the present time and is defiant.” Scorsese’s career-spanning documentary of the band combines Rolling Stones archive footage with two days of intense filming at New York’s historic Beacon Theatre, where they performed as part of their "A Bigger Bang" tour. On his decision not to interview the band, Scorsese told The Guardian: “What more could you know from them, except the music and the performance? The music stays and the performance stays. This is something that I found inspiring. So I decided not to interview anybody.” The Oscar-winning director added: “It's not about the music of the Sixties or the Seventies or what they did in the Eighties. It's who they are now, and how they play onstage and how they interact, and what that music and that performance, does to an audience. That's the truth.” Rolling Stones’ members Jagger, Richards, Wood and Watts are to produce the film, with the release date scheduled for April 2008.

Amy Winehouse cancels Rolling Stones support slots

Amy Winehouse has pulled out of two support slots with The Rolling Stones in Germany this week. The star, who has recently cancelled a number of performances and was admitted to hospital last week, will no longer perform with the rock legends in Dusseldorf and Hamburg. Scheduled to appear at Dusseldorf LTU Arena tonight (August 13) and Hamburg AOL Arena on Wednesday (August 15), Winehouse will be replaced by The Answer and Starsailor, respectively.
