Cecil Womack dies aged 65

Cecil Womack, brother of Bobby Womack and one half of Womack and Womack, has died aged 65. Womack passed away on February 1 in Africa. Bobby Womack confirmed his death earlier today (February 7). In his later years, Womack was known as Zekuumba Zekkariyas after embracing his African heritage and finding family ties to the Zekkariyas tribe. He was best known for Womack And Womack's 1988 hit single "Teardrops", which he recorded with his second wife, Linda Cooke, the daughter of soul singer Sam Cooke.

The Tenth Uncut Playlist Of 2009

A lot of records on the playlist this week, I think, probably due to the fact that I’ve kept a note of what we’ve been playing for three full days. I guess the big one here is “Veckatimest”, the new Grizzly Bear album, which we now have a copy of. Incredible record, which I’ll be writing about soon, possibly tomorrow.

The Hold Steady: “Stay Positive”

First, a couple of lyrics (and God knows, there are plenty to quote on the Hold Steady’s fourth album). From the opening song, “Constructive Summer”: “Let this be my annual reminder that we can all be something bigger.” From the last song, “Slapped Actress”, repeated by Craig Finn while the music swells and a rabble choir add “woah-oh”s: “Man, we make our own movies.”

Is this the end for Spider-Man..? Or: Why the world really doesn’t need Web 3.0.

Coming from the same creative team behind the first two Spider-Man movies -- headed by director Sam Raimi -- the big question hanging over part 3 is: what the hell went wrong? Spider-Man 3 seems to have been willed into existence by the combined efforts of marketing departments, merchandise divisions and third-party licencees. The result is soulless and witless, a sequel too far.
