Inspiral Carpets Play To A Different Choon

The Inspiral Carpets have lent their support of new music programme‘Choon’. The programme promises to give musicians the chance to raise their profile with people who have a serious interest in music. Inspirals guitarist Graham Lambert says, “The whole concept of ‘Choon’ sounds like a fantastic idea, not only for a band like the Inspirals but I like the idea that new bands can be given airtime whilst unsigned.” Lambert who with the reformed Inspiral Carpets has just completed a successful tour added, “The Inspiral Carpets had very few TV options when we started out… We relied heavily on John Peel who loved our early records.” The producer of ‘Choon’, Felix Taylor, former bass player with 90’s band Mover, commented “The Inspirals know how hard it can be for talent to get lost in a morass of mediocracy.” Each edition of ‘Choon’ is set to be a concentration of great new bands and musicians, to encourage other singers or bands out there who want to be heard. As Taylor puts it, “…there isn’t a national music programme like this anywhere else in the UK at the moment.” Broadcast every weekday evening, 9.30pm and 10pm, ‘Choon’ launches on Propeller TV (Sky 195) on April 2. SXSW: Gallows, Lily Allen, Jamie T, The Gossip, Willy Mason

Hey, one last report from last week's South By Southwest festival. This one is by Ben Perreau, who edits Uncut and NME's websites. Ben seems to have spent most of the week failing to get into parties and fantasising about Smashing Pumpkins, but he did manage to see the mighty Gallows, The Gossip and plenty more cool stuff. . . "South By Southwest boasts afternoon free-beer parties often with bigger names than the official evening events. Wednesday afternoon began with the fear that the previous nights' weather madness (grounded twice, our flight time had been doubled resulting in a final landing amongst fork-lightning) might return. We clung together, dismayed by the fact that the weather was better in London, and in our huddle rumours spread of the return of Smashing Pumpkins at a secret show later in the week. I was desperate to believe them. Unrattled, we stood in the wet gravel for NME's party at the legendary Stubbs for Brits in the mist Mumm-Ra, who inject enthusiasm into the afternoon. "This is our first gig in the USA," they announced, ahead of them lies relentless gigging and a string of dank motel rooms. The Young Knives galvanised, but they've just finished their first tour here - and it showed. Later, the evening was activated with Jamie T, the antidote. Perky and spry, he goaded the crowd into interacting with him. Ready to lavish us with more expletives, Lily Allen was evidently the big pull of the day, later having a pop at Uncut's sister publication NME three times during her short set. Soon to be famous for his burgeoning friendship with a Hollywood actress, Johnny Borrell (see April Long's earlier blog) rode the Razorlight beast onstage at around ten, and just as the sky cleared, so did the venue. Shame: Razorlight have been playing their eponymous second album for six months and their stage show is bound together far better than rumours of fractiousness suggest. New York boys of 2004 The Bravery close Wednesday night, but despite the headline slot, even their newly grown-up look couldn'tsave them. Thursday was bright and hot but that's where my luck ended. Amy Winehouse played a small nearby bar. I couldn't get in, so I gazed through the window for the five most glorious minutes of the afternoon and re-examined my itinerary. Determined not to see another Brit for the rest of the week (it's tough) I ambled over to the Mohawk Patio to be greeted by another ridiculous queue for The Besnard Lakes. Luckily all the way over at the other end of town, Cold War Kids left inches of standing room at La Zona Rosa, one of the biggest venues in town. One of the fun bands of last year, they proved somewhat dull and we snuck off to watch the usually-thrilling Bloc Party back at Stubb's, but the outdoors didn't suit their show and despite goodwill from the crowd, they disappointed too. Finally, we queued to catch two songs from The Gossip. Thankfully one was "Standing In The Way Of Control" - cue Beth Ditto stripping off to her underwear, at which point I left for a much-needed beer at a late-night party. Drunk, I tried desperately to put to use my journalistic skills and 'rat out' the location of the fabled Smashing Pumpkins gig to no avail before wittering at one of The Horrors and passing out. A sore head and three hours sleep later on Friday and I was in search of something entirely new. I grabbed a breakfast burrito and buckled before Gallows, who restored my soul and purged the poison from my body. Frank Carter howled through their third show of the week whilst quickly amassing a crowd that octupled in 15minutes. All the way up at 17th Street was a party where I caught the buzz band of the week, Illinois. Sadly it was a long way to go for yet another North American indie band who wouldn't have made the cut for Uncut's recent "Wake Up" CD. Unremarkable. In search of glory I was determined to investigate some more tip-offs, Brazil's Bonde Du Role are funk-partyists who must be getting extra attention recently due to the successes of fellow countrymen CSS. Bopping to Bonde proved a sure-fire way to quickly sink two frozen margheritas in quick succesion, so punching the air in a jubilant (woozy, again) mood, I was ready for Yo! Majesty, a hip-hop trio from Florida. What followed was a seat of your pants exciting show which provided that 'this is what I came for' feeling. To end the week Willy Mason played in a nearby church, a worthy excuse to bring all that high-energy spirit back to base. Whereas his first album was recorded rough and songs were college-polished, his newer material hung together tightly. A last-ditch attempt to party in front of Albert Hammond Jr proved pointless and time was up, my dreams of Billy Corgan and James Iha in a glorious onstage embrace dashed."

John Carpenter To Make Escape From New York: The Beginning

0

Revered film maker John Carpenter has discussed details about a new film featuring cult anti-hero Snake Plissken from “Escape From New York.” The original classic '81 film starring Kurt Russell as Plissken, was set in a future where Manhattan district is now a high security prison, from which he must rescue the President of the United States. Carpenter who is currently attached as executive producer believes that rather than a straight remake or sequel, the film is likely to be a prequel-like look at the characters activities before the events of the original. He has said of the production so far, “…I read the scripts and make sure the character is the same character that we wrote originally. My other main involvement…is to extend my hand and have a check placed in it.” Talk of revisiting Carpenter’s oeuvre follows recent news that heavy metal star Rob Zombie is to direct a remake of Carpenter's 1978 classic “Halloween.”

Damon Albarn Searches For Monkey’s Tale

0

Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett, the artists behind multi-platinum animated band Gorillaz have been approached to compose and design the musical, “Monkey: Journey to the West.” Based on a classic from Chinese literature, dating back to 1592, it concerns itself with the Monkey King, a beloved character in the canon. Albarn said he and Hewlett are honoured to be involved, calling it “…the original adventure story, but its thousands of years old; that’s what really drew us to it.” He added “We went to China and travelled to get a picture of what China is like now and combine that with an ancient, classic China.” Conceived and directed by Chen Shi-Zheng, a renowned theatre, opera and film director, with the desire of retelling the story of Monkey, who “…manages to smite demons and defeat fiends with his superior kung fu skills…to gain the ultimate prize for himself, the attainment of Buddhahood”. The production performed in Mandarin promises circus acrobats, Shaolin martial arts and Chinese singers performing Damon Albarn’s debut operatic score, utilising Western and traditional Chinese instruments within an orchestra of thirty musicians from around the world. Artist Hewlett was tasked with creating a visual universe, including cacophony of characters from Spider Maidens to Skeleton Demons, which is currently being constructed in Beijing, Paris, Berlin and London. “Monkey: Journey to the West” will launch the inaugural Manchester International Festival at the Palace Theatre on June 28. Paul McCartney has now confirmed that he is to release a new studio album through worldwide coffee giants Starbucks' new record label. The former Beatle announced via video feed at the company’s annual meeting his decision to sign with their Los Angeles based Hear Music label. McCartney said his decision to go with Hear Music for his new album reflected the changes in the music industry - as artists searched for new ways to sell albums with the competition from online and digital formats. He has also said he was hoping to release his as yet untitled album as early as June this year. This venture with the Concord Music Group marks another step for the Seattle based coffee firms attempts to expand its appeal within the entertainment business. Hear Music has previously been used as a brand within releases found within Starbucks stores. Starbucks have also branded pages on Apple Inc.’s iTunes digital music store. The chain are also expanding their services with a growing number of hybrid music and coffee stores, where customers have access to download and burn music to CDs.

Further thoughts on Elliott Smith

0

I received an interesting message yesterday from SAm, responding to my preview of the forthcoming Elliott Smith album. "It bothers me a little bit to read, here and elsewhere, Elliott's 'strummed melodies' described as 'simple'," he writes. "Elliott was a good lyricist, a very good guitar player, and decent singer, but what makes him totally unique and superior to virtually all of his contemporaries is the melodic songwriting, the ingenuity and originality of the chord progressions. The formal problem that pop songs present is that they must be a)short b) instantly familiar and c) unfamiliar. It's an exercise in expectations ingeniously subverted and then met. "Go and play his songs on the guitar, or try to. I guarantee you will find in almost every one a sophisticated and basically amazing sequence of chords within the overall, conventional melodic structure - ie the difference between a good song and a boring one. It takes a certain kind of musical IQ to come up with that, something I've never detected in, say, Keith Richards, or the guy who writes the songs in Modest Mouse. OK, rant over." I've never played a guitar, or any instrument in fact, so I can't personally test out SAm's theory. It does strike me, though, as touching on a couple of fairly prickly subjects. One is about why Elliott Smith's music is so effective and, frequently, affecting. On the surface, he was a fairly conventional singer-songwriter, indebted - like so many others - to The Beatles, with a vague folkiness that comes to the fore on the solo acoustic songs on "New Moon". A casual listener might skip through a few of his albums and conclude his songs were even fairly samey. And certainly, Smith worked in a pretty narrow range. If we disregard the emotional impact of his words and voice for a moment, perhaps it is the "sophisticated and basically amazing sequence of chords within the overall, conventional melodic structure" that made his songs so powerful. Which brings us to the second slightly disturbing thought which SAm's email provoked. If a song is successful because of a technical melodic complexity which can only be identified by someone who tries to play it, does that mean that so much music journalism is based on hunches? Is Brian May right, and should I try and write my own songs before I've earned the right to criticise those of other people? I think the answer to that one is 'no', but of course I would say that. The overall impression that a record makes is more important and more interesting to read about, I reckon, than a musicological exposition. Part of the charm of Elliott Smith's songs is that they appear simple, that they create an illusion of direct, spontaneous emotional communication even though real craftsmanship underpins it. But maybe occasionally a look at the melodic nuts and bolts can give us an insight into what makes a song work? I'm going on a bit now. But anyway, we have one more report coming up from South By Southwest to come (tomorrow, hopefully). Other things to look forward to on Wild Mercury Sound soon: Mark E Smith and Mouse On Mars' stomping collaboration, Von Sudenfed; the garage glam of The 1990s; the medieval electronica of Colleen; the fantastic Marnie Stern; and, hopefully, previews of Bjork and The White Stripes. Just don't ask me to analyse their compositional skills. . .
