One day, I imagine turning up at a festival and being confronted by a dedicated Wainwright/McGarrigle And Related Folk Families stage. There’ll be Rufus and Loudon and Kate & Anna. There’ll be Rufus’ good friend Teddy Thompson, and maybe his mum and dad and sister. There could, ideally, be Rufus’ other friend, Lorca Cohen, and her dad, the born-again road animal, Leonard.
And then, of course, there’ll be Rufus’ sister Martha Wainwright, just conceivably stealing the show from all of them. It is Martha, as you might have gathered, who is the dynasty’s representative at Latitude, gracing the Uncut Arena with her presence on Friday night, sandwiched between the eclectic pairing of Amadou & Mariam and Julian Cope.
Wainwright, we imagine, will be concentrating her marvellously soaring, feisty voice on songs from this year’s “I Know You’re Married But I’ve Got Feelings Too”, which will benefit from having the slightly prissy studio trappings removed from them. Hopefully, she’ll also have a go at “Bloody Motherfucking Asshole”, a vastly better song than it’s gosh-aren’t-I-shocking? title might suggest. She’s funny, too.
