There have been plenty of surprises and revelations in music during the last twelve months. Admittedly, perhaps not all of them have had the same impact as the sudden arrival of records by David Bowie or My Bloody Valentine; nevertheless, a Tweet on June 3 from Edwyn Collins’ label AED carried its own quietly momentous piece of breaking news. “A new @RoddyFrame record in the wind, on AED, early 2014. It’s a lovely thing, just wait til you hear it. Watch this space, popsters.”

Pavement frontman and solo artist Malkmus is releasing a new album, Wig Out At Jagbags, with his band, The Jicks, on January 6, 2014. Here, though, is a classic archive feature from our September 2011 issue (Take 172), in which the guitarist and songwriter answers questions from fans and celebrity admirers including Graham Coxon, Nigel Godrich, Avey Tare, Stewart Lee and Scrabble enthusiast Giles Brandreth. A new Wes Anderson tribute album is set for release next year. I Saved Latin! is a two-CD collection of songs taken from director Anderson's films, including tracks by bands such as The Rolling Stones, John Lennon, David Bowie and The Velvet Underground. Artists contributing covers include Black Francis and Kristin Hersh. All of the songs included on the album are taken from the soundtracks to Anderson’s films: The Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore, The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou, The Darjeeling Limited, Fantastic Mr Fox and Bottle Rocket.

The Small Faces have confirmed details for their Here Comes The Nice The Immediate Years Boxset 1967-1969 deluxe collector's box set. The set contains 75 songs spread over 4 CDs remastered from original analogue master tapes and studio multitracks. Rare and previously unreleased material, unheard recording sessions from Olympic, IBC & Trident Studios, outtakes, early mixes, alternate versions and live material across 3CDs.

It is rumoured that Bruce Springsteen will release a new song this week.

Thurston Moore's new band, Thurston Moore UK, are set to support Lee Ranaldo and the Dust at London's Garage venue on November 21. Lee Ranaldo and the Dust are made up of Ranaldo, Steve Shelley, Alan Licht and Tim Luntzel. They released their new album Last Night On Earth last month. Following the London show, the band play All Tomorrow's Parties festival at Camber Sands Pontins on November 22.

Celebrating anniversaries has, I guess, become second nature in the music industry now. A quick pass through the reviews pages in the last couple of issues of Uncut reveal anniversary reissues and special editions for Nirvana, Billy Bragg, Tears For Fears, R.E.M, Four Tet and Bob Marley.

A lot of things can happen when you watch The Necks, the magnificent Australian improvising trio, play live. Sometimes, you can become fixated on prosaic details: how does Tony Buck’s left hand keep vibrating that shaker onto his drumkit at such an ecstatic velocity for so long, for instance? Do they have hidden clocks that allow them to move so elegantly to a conclusion without appearing to even acknowledge each other’s presence, let alone look at one another? Will unzipping my coat be an unacceptably noisy intervention?

The making of George Harrison’s debut solo single, “My Sweet Lord”, is examined in the new issue of Uncut, dated December 2013, and out tomorrow (October 29).

After raving about the new Alasdair Roberts and White Fence albums on the past few lists, I’m pleased to have some tracks from them this week, along with really excellent new arrivals from Kevin Morby and Ryley Walker.
