Roddy Frame, London Theatre Royal Drury Lane, December 1, 2013

There have been plenty of surprises and revelations in music during the last twelve months. Admittedly, perhaps not all of them have had the same impact as the sudden arrival of records by David Bowie or My Bloody Valentine; nevertheless, a Tweet on June 3 from Edwyn Collins’ label AED carried its own quietly momentous piece of breaking news. “A new @RoddyFrame record in the wind, on AED, early 2014. It’s a lovely thing, just wait til you hear it. Watch this space, popsters.”

Patti Smith to perform at Green Man festival

Patti Smith has been added to the line-up for this year's Green Man Festival. Smith will headline a night of live music in the Far Out Tent on the Thursday night (August 15) of the festival that runs between August 15 and 18. Smith's appearance, the only UK festival she will be performing at this Summer, will see her join a bill that includes Jon Langford, Matt Berry and Manchester band Money.

David Bowie’s The Next Day – The ultimate review and 10-page special in the new Uncut

David Bowie’s return to active service with The Next Day has been described as the greatest comeback ever and I’m sure every Bowie fan is hoping this will in fact be the truth of the matter when they finally get to hear the album, which is released on March 11, still a tantalising couple of weeks away at the time of writing.

To Matthew E White’s first London show tonight, all being well, but in the meantime this week’s playlist, with a few things to listen to and watch, as is becoming a hopefully useful habit.

Gram Parsons, Ray Davies, Mick Ronson, Simple Minds, The Rolling Stones, Family and Nick Drake’s mum in the new Uncut

There’s a lot to be said for the charisma of premature death. And the manner of his particular dying – turning blue on a motel floor at the age of 26, his heart fatally faltering, ice cubes being stuffed up his ass in a pathetic attempt to bring him back from the brink after one binge too many – booked Gram parsons an automatic place of honour in a rock’n’roll Valhalla already overcrowded with dead young heroes, Jimi, Janis, Brian Jones, Jim Morrison, Otis Redding, Sam Cooke and more already among its spectral population when Gram died in September, 1973.

The 26th Uncut Playlist Of 2010

Some respite, finally, from the Great Lost goose chase – though I probably should reassure JB23 that Miracle Legion’s “Me And Mr Ray” makes it into the 50 list we’ve published in the new Uncut.
