Two things from the weekend. First, I finally dipped into the Beatles remasters, after several weeks of shrugging, mild curiosity and morbid suspicion of overhype. Oh, and a lot of me reiterating my default position of claiming The Beatles weren’t that great – a position which, yet again, was shown up to be more or less complete idiocy when I actually bothered to listen to them. Come on, “Blue Jay Way”!
Second, I became obsessively fixated on the b-side of the new Grizzly Bear single, “While You Wait For The Others”; the same song, from maybe my album of the year thus far, “Veckatimest” (yes sure I am indie cliché), with a new lead vocal from Michael McDonald. Weird idea, but it works beautifully.
Plus, here’s new Mountains, Espers, On Fillmore (that’s Glenn Kotche and Darin Gray), and a Pavement reformation. Pretty good times.
Tricky – Maxinequaye: Deluxe Edition (Universal Island)
Little Claw – Human Taste (Ecstatic Peace!)
Jim O’Rourke – Insignificance (Domino)
On Fillmore – Extended Vacation (Dead Oceans)
Kurt Vile – Childish Prodigy (Matador)
Mountains – Etching (Thrill Jockey)
Grizzly Bear Featuring Michael McDonald – While You Wait For The Others (Warp)
Espers – Espers III (Wichita)
Massive Attack – Splitting The Atom EP (Virgin)
Sufjan Stevens/Osso – Run Rabbit Run (Asthmatic Kitty)
The Mumlers – Don’t Throw Me Away (Galaxia)
LCD Soundsystem – 45:33 Remixes (DFA/Parlophone)
King Khan & BBQ Show – Invisible Girl (In The Red)
