Zombies

Dawn Of The Dead

The second of George Romero's classic zombie trilogy, from 1978. This time the blood and guts were in full colour, the make-up and effects more inventive. Much of the action takes place in a shopping mall filled with zombies lurching mindlessly around?not the subtlest of satires on consumerism, but still highly effective, and as slyly funny as it is gory.

Shaun Of The Dead

Suburban horror comedy from the creators of warped sitcom Spaced. When a mysterious plague strikes London, Shaun (Simon Pegg) has to battle hordes of blood-crazed zombies to rescue his mum and girlfriend. The zombie sequences pastiche the genre, adding genuinely witty slapstick, and the script is as good as Spaced or better. A delight.

Rock City

First-time CD release for pre-Big Star band recordings

The Happiness Of The Katakuris

Truly wonderful Japanese black comedy about a nice family who open a quiet B&B in the mountains, only to watch all their guests accidentally perish in increasingly macabre ways. Utterly barking stuff, this has something for everyone—surreal musical numbers with dancing zombies, claymation sequences and an exploding volcano! With movies like this around, who needs drugs?

The Singles – Better Than Before

Skinny-tied power pop with a whiff of Mersey, Zombies and Chuck Berry

House Of 1000 Corpses

Metal vocalist's impressive horror debut

Shanghai Knights – Hollywood

Not a film many people outside the Jackie Chan Completists Society will be urging you to see, but a nifty set of British '60s sounds, avoiding the usual chestnuts and instead dredging up memories you never knew you had, like "Winchester Cathedral" by The New Vaudeville Band, possibly the oddest pop song ever conceived. Although it's given a run for its pottiness by Roger Miller's "England Swings".
