Reading a little about the whole Beyoncé lipsynching controversy the other day, I was tangentially reminded of an interview I did with Jim O’Rourke in, I think, 1999 (bear with me…).

Producer Tony Visconti has said that the new David Bowie album is "a rock album", saying he was surprised to hear the reflective and melancholic track "Where Are We Now?" released first. Visconti spoke to BBC News following Bowie's surprise return yesterday with the new single and a new album, The Next Day, announced for March.

David Bowie has released a new single, "Where Are We Now?", this morning [January 8 - Bowie's birthday]. You can watch the video below. The single will be followed on March 12 by THE NEXT DAY, Bowie's first new album in 10 years and his 30th studio recording. It has been produced by Tony Visconti. Thurston Moore had his 1960 Fender Jazzmaster stolen on Wednesday (December 12). The incident occurred around midnight at a Philadelphia hotel, reports a message on Sonic Youth's website.

A selection of rare Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros tracks have been released - and you can listen to them below. Strummer started working with the backing band he called The Mescaleros in the mid-to-late 1990s. The band' first album Rock Art And The X-Ray Style was released in 1999. Their second studio album Global a Go-Go followed in 2001. A third album was released posthumously in 2003, after Strummer's death in 2002.

Two guitars stolen at a Sonic Youth gig in 1999 have been returned, 13 years later. The band's rented truck full of their equipment was stolen in the middle of the night before a festival appearance in Orange County. The truck was later found in Los Angeles, empty.
