Singer claims door is “still open” for keyboardist

The Specials singer Terry Hall has denied he forced ex-band mate Jerry Dammers out of the band’s recent reunion.

Speaking to the Guardian today, Hall refutes claims made in a statement by Dammers that he had been “forced out” of the reunion by Hall and his friend, multimillionaire Simon Jordan. The Specials founder claimed in December that he had been legally prevented from contacting any of his former bandmates and that the group refused to rehearse with him, allegations Hall and other members Lynval Golding and John Bradbury deny.

“I’ve read Jerry’s statement and I just don’t get it,” said Hall. “They’re trying to kick me out of the band – not at all mate, not at all.”

“I spoke to Jerry night after night all the way through 2008 and at the end there just wasn’t a meeting of the ways,” said drummer John Bradbury. “A little more give and take, a few more people skills, it could definitely have worked out better.”

“I don’t think he likes the idea of touring, to be honest,” added Hall. “I think he hid that a bit in his statement. But apart from that, I have no idea why Jerry isn’t doing it.”

The reformed Specials will play a series of dates throughout the UK this spring without Dammers.

“Hand on my heart, I feel a bit sad for Jerry,” said Hall. “He’s fucking missing out. He’s missing out on being in this incredible band. We haven’t changed that much, we still take the piss out of each other, there’s an understanding there that hasn’t gone away. And he’s missing out on that, and it’s sad for him, to be honest.”
