Robert Johnson – The Old School Blues

Look closely at the cover of Dylan's Bringing It All Back Home, and you'll see a copy of Robert Johnson's King Of The Delta Blues Singers. Released in 1961 but recorded a quarter of a century earlier, the Stones, Cream and Led Zeppelin all plundered it for source material, making it arguably the single most influential album on '60s rock. All 29 sides recorded by Johnson in his short lifetime are included here, and if you don't already own them, now's your chance. That they come with a second disc rounding up 25 of Johnson's contemporaries from Bessie Smith to Son House is a bonus.

Reviewed: Respect Yourself: Stax Records And The Soul Explosion by Robert Gordon

As Robert Gordon reminds us in Respect Yourself: Stax Records And The Soul Explosion, his terrific account of the rise and fall of the great Memphis soul imprint, the Stax story is more than a record-label history. “It is an American story,” Gordon writes,” where the shoe-shine boy becomes a star, the country hayseed an international magnate. It’s the story of individuals against society, of small business competing with large, of the disenfranchised seeking their own tile in the American mosaic.”

Wilko Johnson announces extra London farewell gig

Wilko Johnson has announced details of an extra farewell concert in London, due to popular demand. The new show is set to take place on March 10 at KOKO. The date is in addition to four previously announced, sold-out shows, which followed news that Johnson had been diagnosed with terminal cancer and will not be seeking treatment for the illness. Johnson reportedly decided against chemotherapy so he can continue to play shows for as long as possible.
