Where St Etienne's recent Songs For Mario's Café compilation evoked Jean Shrimpton dancing the Madison in fabbest Biba gear, The Trip is its superior '70s counterpart (Ali MacGraw doing the Hustle in a halter-neck, perhaps?). It'd take a deaf curmudgeon to find fault with a running order that segues dreamily from Marvin Gaye's "Symphony" to The Mamas & The Papas' "Shooting Star" and out the other side into The Supremes. Disc 2 even brings in Fairports, Dusty, Dillard & Clark and mandatory Etienne idol John Barry. An outstanding selection.
