It would be hard to improve on the description of The Wall offered by the editor of Uncut recently in his "Stop Me If You've Heard This One Before" column. "An impossibly miserable psychodrama, four sides of groaning self-pity, morbid pessimism and relentless musical hogwash, "Allan Jones wrote in describing Pink Floyd's original 1979 studio recording. And nothing had improved when Waters performed the work live at the Berlin Wall on July 21, 1990. Even the galaxy of estimable guest singers, including Van Morrison, Sinéad O'Connor and Joni Mitchell, fail to save him from his hubris.

Overdone and Contrived

There's no real need to get this recording, although the proceeds still go to the memorial fund for disaster relief, your better off getting the DVD for the splendour of it, the music though is hogwash with the Scorpions mullicating 'Run Like Hell' and Cyndi Lauper doing likewise with 'Another Brick', fair dues to Joni Mitchell though for her rendition of 'Goodbye Blue Sky'. Personally I prefer, Is There Anybody Out There - The Wall Live 1980 /81, it absolutely kicks ass and knocks the spots of the original studio album and the live Berlin album, mainly because Gilmour is actually there with Waters and thats basically the whole reason we like the band, great drumming from Nick and some nice extra embellishments from Rick Wright. Ok,this has gotta stop, I'm supposed to be reviewing the Berlin Wall concert CD, ah well nuff said.

It's just not cricket

Somewhat of a decent attempt by Roger to capture the feeling of the Berlin Wall coming down, but let's face facts here. We miss the all-together Floyd and that means Dave Gilmour must be present, along with Nick & Rick. Just imagine how much MORE of an event this would have been if it was a Floyd gig. I agree with most in saying the performances are lacking. We wanted the Floyd back, which in the post-Roger era is still better than Roger's excruciating solo efforts. Why does everything he brings out sound like a rehash of Pros & Cons of Hitchiking (which was crap anyway)? The only exception might be Amused To Death, but even that clever comment was still mired in non-musical hogwash and innuendo. Kinda sick of the 'back up singer' effect too, Roger. We know you can't sing, but we were ok with it, really. Stay calm, smooth and your voice really is 'good enough' without the girls, mate.

Back to the Wall in Berlin - it's just not cricket, old chap. Only for hardcore Floydians ..
