The quartet with possibly the finest name in the history of rock are quietly building a fervent following, lionised in the US for their staunch indie principles. I couldn't give a toss if they're sodomising corporate Lucifer: this is a record of rare beauty and poise, miles away from the 'underground' clichés you'd expect from such a, by now, tired background. Vocalist/guitarist Ben Gibbard has a charming knack for avoiding easy tropes, and his phrasing on the subtly startling opener "New Year" are special and spatially aware. Post-rock becomes a beautiful haze of balladry on "Tiny Vessels" and the pining, eight-minute title track: kinda Coldplay if they weren't irritating, or Low with a pulse.
