OPENS OCTOBER 3, CERT 12A, 102 MINS

Potentially a vibrant bit of fun, this knowing retro-romp is hindered by one millstone: Ewan McGregor (here starring, in a chemistry-free zone, opposite Renée Zellweger). With the charisma of a scouring pad, he capsizes its rhythm and flow, a narcissistic lead weight on its intended airiness. God, he's shit.

An affectionate spoof of the golden age of Rock Hudson/Doris Day rom-coms, this is saturated in ravishing Technicolor, and set in a New York of swinging supper clubs and bachelor pads. Bring It On director Peyton Reed propels Barbara (Zellweger) into the city with the titular pre-feminist manifesto, decreeing that women say yes to career and sex, no to romance. It becomes a bestseller. But McGregor's sleazy playboy journalist Catcher Block (yeah, right) is determined to woo her, disprove her theories, then expose her in the press. They thrust and parry. The froth is stirred by his lovesick buddy (David Hyde Pierce) and her 'feisty' editor (Sarah Paulson). High, if pointless, jinks ensue. It's Far From Heaven on laughing gas. Half of it works well; the rest is Ewan's.
