A new year loomed, distantly, and with it the annual music business imperative to embrace a tranche of new artists. Around the same time, the 2014 Mercury Prize hoopla culminated with a victory for the Scottish hip hop act, Young Fathers, and their "Dead" album, one of seven debuts in the shortlist of 12.</p> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img src="http://www.uncut.co.uk/sites/default/files/imagecache/blog/2014/11/janspreads241114w.jpg" alt="" title="" class="imagecache imagecache-blog imagecache-default imagecache-blog_default" width="630" height="300" /> </div> </div> </div> <p><a href="http://www.uncut.co.uk/blog/uncut-editors-diary/inside-the-new-uncut-the-best-albums-of-2014" target="_blank">read more</a></p> Uncut Editor's Diary Tue, 25 Nov 2014 09:51:58 +0000 John Mulvey 21092 at http://www.uncut.co.uk The 43rd Uncut Playlist Of 2014 http://www.uncut.co.uk/blog/uncut-editors-diary/the-43rd-uncut-playlist-of-2014 <p>Very taken with Africa Express' version of "In C", by Terry Riley, this week. On the rather intimidating new Scott Walker and Sunn O))) album, there appears to be a joke about Michael Flatley's testicles. Somewhere in the elevated aesthetics of Kate Bush's Before The Dawn, there's an equally dubious comedy routine that hinges on the punchline, "HP and mayo, it's the badger's nadgers." And then, just as we were finishing the new issue of Uncut (out today in the UK, as you may have seen), a U2 album suddenly materialised in iTunes, a bullish play to reassert them as the biggest pop group in the world.</p> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img src="http://www.uncut.co.uk/sites/default/files/imagecache/blog/2014/09/230914novissuew.jpg" alt="" title="" class="imagecache imagecache-blog imagecache-default imagecache-blog_default" width="630" height="300" /> </div> </div> </div> <p><a href="http://www.uncut.co.uk/blog/uncut-editors-diary/inside-this-months-new-uncut" target="_blank">read more</a></p> Uncut Editor's Diary Tue, 23 Sep 2014 09:53:02 +0000 John Mulvey 20826 at http://www.uncut.co.uk The 35th Uncut Playlist Of 2014 http://www.uncut.co.uk/blog/uncut-editors-diary/the-35th-uncut-playlist-of-2014 <p>Weird serendipities aplenty this week: versions of "O, Death" on two albums I downloaded one after another, by Mike &amp; Cara Gangloff and Bessie Jones; dovetailing into Sea Island overlap between Jones and Loscil. At one point, I recall some talk of red moons and feverish online triangulations pointing to a bookshop near Edinburgh as the centre of the universe. It was all fun, and the album at the end of it all was great, but perhaps it wandered a little off course as it went on.</p> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img src="http://www.uncut.co.uk/sites/default/files/imagecache/blog/2014/08/aphextwin180814w.jpg" alt="" title="" class="imagecache imagecache-blog imagecache-default imagecache-blog_default" width="630" height="300" /> </div> </div> </div> <p><a href="http://www.uncut.co.uk/blog/uncut-editors-diary/the-return-of-the-aphex-twin-and-caustic-window" target="_blank">read more</a></p> Uncut Editor's Diary Tue, 19 Aug 2014 11:56:27 +0000 John Mulvey 20687 at http://www.uncut.co.uk “When the sun goes down, it’s different here.” An interview with Hurray For The Riff Raff http://www.uncut.co.uk/blog/uncut-editors-diary/when-the-sun-goes-down-it-s-different-here-an-interview-with-hurray-for-the <p><em>This is the full text of my interview with <strong>Hurray For The Riff Raff</strong> in New Orleans, that appeared in the print edition of Uncut a couple of months ago. "It is what it is and I like what it is," he calls the album in the piece, somewhat self-effacingly, "and there's a lot of stuff out there that I've done that I like less. Best place to start, maybe, is the <strong>Natalie Prass</strong> record that <strong>Matthew E White</strong> has been sitting on for well over a year (he played me some of it at Spacebomb in March 2013). Fantastic song, which I described on Twitter as a kind of nuts Anita Baker/Willie Mitchell/Feist/Charles Stepney thing with a beat that would've been samplefood for Dre 15 yrs ago. Sticking with that for now. Also the red kite feather we found on holiday in Avebury feels serendipitous.</p> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img src="http://www.uncut.co.uk/sites/default/files/imagecache/blog/2014/08/in-the-orbit-of-ra-final-cover-web-rgb.jpg" alt="" title="" class="imagecache imagecache-blog imagecache-default imagecache-blog_default" width="630" height="300" /> </div> </div> </div> <p><a href="http://www.uncut.co.uk/blog/uncut-editors-diary/the-29th-uncut-playlist-of-2014" target="_blank">read more</a></p> Uncut Editor's Diary Thu, 07 Aug 2014 09:39:06 +0000 John Mulvey 20612 at http://www.uncut.co.uk Introducing… Tom Waits: The Ultimate Music Guide http://www.uncut.co.uk/blog/uncut-editors-diary/introducing-tom-waits-the-ultimate-music-guide <p>Tom Waits, as you probably know, is right about most things and amusingly duplicitous about most others. Along with the intensely spirited debut by <strong>Mary Timony</strong>'s <strong>Ex-Hex</strong> and a comp of the pre-<strong>Beachwood Sparks</strong>, <strong>Sebadoh</strong>-indebted <strong>Further</strong>, it feels a little like College Rock revisited week.
