Countdown to Latitude...Tinariwen

TINARIWEN

Brought to the attention of the western world by Robert Plant’s guitarist, Justin Adams (he produced their first LP), Tinariwen are a collective of Touareg musicians from north Mali, also veterans of Muammar Gadafy’s guerrilla training camps.

They toted guns along with their guitars in the 1990 rebellion, but, now peace has settled, they concentrate on their music, a haunting and spectral, desert blues distinguished by hypnotic, interlocking riffs and call-and-response vocals. You can hear the sound Plant has likened to “dropping a bucket into a deep well” when Tinariwen play the Uncut Arena on the opening day of Latitude.

Latitude takes place July 12 - 15 at Henham Park, Southwold, Suffolk.
