THE NATIONAL

Brooklyn-based Ohio emigres – and Uncut favourites – The National have been playing increasingly large venues with each visit to UK shores and it’s not hard to see why.

Led by the charismatic Matt Berninger, they offer an intriguingly indefinable, richly romantic form of noir-ish chamber rock, which suggests The Go-Betweens and Interpol, had either been reared on gothic country music.

Berninger’s dark lyrical humour is key, lending both confessions of his own shortfalls and depictions of mankind’s general fallibility an irresistible power.

The National play the Obelisk Arena on Sunday July 15. Latitude takes place July 12 - 15 at Henham Park, Southwold, Suffolk.
