Latitude 2009

Countdown to Latitude... Damien Rice

DAMIEN RICE

Irish troubadour Rice distinguished himself from the weedy, confessional singer-songwriter pack early on with his debut album from 2002, ‘O’, working strings, gnarled blues and sexual frankness into his contemporary folk mix.

His follow-up LP, ‘9’, was even more eccentric and explored pain and misery with an honesty that made for decidedly uneasy listening. This is part of Rice’s appeal, as is his ability to kick up a storm live, so when he and his gang headline the Latitude’s Obelisk Arena on opening night, expect Southern-fried boogie, French chanson, hammering blues, funk, glowering neo-gothic and even a stomping cover of Prince’s ‘Kiss’ alongside his acoustic introspection.

Latitude takes place July 12 - 15 at Henham Park, Southwold, Suffolk.
