The Morning After The Mercurys: The 36th Uncut Playlist Of 2008

2008-09-10 11:13:25

Hearty congratulations this morning to Elbow, of course, who proved last night that they're the least-disliked band in the British music business.

Continued...

As I think I mentioned in my blog on “The Seldom-Seen Kid” earlier in the year (visited, you’ll note, by someone called Guy Garvey, who I choose to believe is their real name, and someone else called Harmony Korine, which I know for a fact is a pseudonym), it’s a weird album as such, in that it contains some of Elbow’s very best songs and some of their worst, so doesn’t quite achieve the cohesion of, say, “Leaders Of The Free World” or “Asleep In The Back”. Still, it’d be churlish to begrudge them the success, and at least the unfathomably tipped Laura Marling (come on, it’s Dolores O’Riordan for Jack Penate fans) didn’t win.

In the unlikely event that Neon Neon had won, tonight’s Club Uncut might have turned into a victory party, since one of Gruff Rhys’ bandmates, Cate Le Bon, is playing a solo set for us tonight (without the assistance of Har Mar Superstar standing on his ear, we’re assuming). If you want to come down to see her, along with Kurt Wagner of Lambchop and the mighty James Blackshaw, I think a few last tickets are still available.

Anyway, onwards, with this week’s office playlist. A week ruled by Arthur Russell, Crystal Antlers and that confounded MYSTERY RECORD, again. I’ll tell all soon, I promise. . .

1 Kings Of Leon – Only By The Night (RCA)

2 Hush Arbors – Hush Arbors (Ecstatic Peace)

3 Arthur Russell – Love Is Overtaking Me (Rough Trade)

4 Kaiser Chiefs – Never Miss A Beat (B-Unique)

5 Warmer Milks – Soft Walks (ADR)

6 Femi Kuti – Day By Day (Wrasse)

7 Crystal Antlers – Crystal Antlers EP (Touch & Go)

8 Tony Christie – Made In Sheffield (Decca)

9 Spank Rock And Benny Blanco – Bangers & Cash EP (Co Op)

10 Juana Molina – Un Dia (Domino)

11 Edward Woodward – This Man Alone (DJM)

12 Katy Perry – One Of The Boys (Capitol)

13 THE MYSTERY RECORD

14 Appaloosa – The Day (We Fell In Love) (Kitsuné

15 Davila 666 – Davila 666 (In The Red)

16 JT IV – Out Of The Can (Myspace)

17 Fotheringay - Fotheringay 2 (Fledg'ling)

Never been that keen on a 'British" album award as it seems a bit restrictive. Sad that comic opera, white chalk and third weren't nominated as they are all remarkable. But IN RAINBOWS and UNTRUE are excellent and both full of an eerie dread. i don't really know elbow's music, yet have enjoyed guy garvey's radio show which is so warm hearted it's difficult to believe he's a rock star.

I'm pleased that Elbow won, even if I think Burial and Radiohead were also worthy winners. I had a hunch that Portico Quartet were going to win but I was totally wrong! One year one of the token entries is going to have to win. Will be at Club Uncut tonight, looking forward to seeing James Blackshaw for the first time and Kurt Wagner. I know very little about Cate Le Bon. On another subject - just booked tickets to see the Arthur Russell film in a few weeks' time. Looking forward to that too.

I urge you to go see the Kurt Wagner show, he played there (in Paris, that is) two nights ago, and it was lovely. Calexico who played after him may have helped with making this a great night (and the white wine did help too) but Wagner's show, though short, was simply heart-warming. Hopefully he'll also play his worn out cover of You're a big girl now. Ask him gently, he's just a wonderful guy, as are Calexico. Damn, if only all artists were such a nice bunch of people, this would be a great job... anyway, current playlist : Buena Vista Social Club at Canergie Hall : despite all the praise and stories about it, it's, after all, only about the music, and man, is is good music. Juana Molina : Un Dia - wonderfully textured, kinda tribal and confusing, maybe like a latin David Grubbs. Rodney Crowell : Sex and Gasoline, produced by Joe Henry, sounds great, good songs, with The Night's Just Right, which I can't stop listening to. Isaac Hayes : The Movement - perfect stuff. The Sea & Cake : I forgot the title. I like it at lot, far from just the math-rock (or was it post-rock ? I can't recall), very sensual and brilliant music.

Good to see Edward Woodward getting his due from the Uncut office. I'm working my way throught the final series of Callan on DVD - not much singing in that though. Is the mystery record a Kevin Pietersen solo album? It has to happen...

No mention of British Sea Power, Ramonesrip, because I can't stand them I'm afraid. They deserve badges for knot-tying more than Mercury prizes.

Sorry John, but the Laura Marling comment is a bit of a cheap shot based on her haircut! See her live, and you'll see what all the fuss is about - and for the record I can't stand Jack Penate! It couldn't be because, gosh, her and her bandmates aren't from 'da streets' could it?

1) I have no memory of what Dolores O'Riordan's haircut is/was like.
2) I have seen Laura Marling, live, briefly.
3) The idea that I'd ever be prejudiced against an artist because they weren't from, dear God, "da streets" (I can't believe you wrote that) is pretty funny.
4) See what happens when I slag things off?

John, comparing Laura Marling to Dolores O'Riordan may be the most accurate simile in the history of rock journalism. (We'll pass over the fact that it may well be the only accurate simile in the history of rock journalism.)

This row is getting funny! On the other issue, I don't know Elbow but it seems they might have been awarded for all their albums, and for being really nice guys, not necessarily for this album in particular. A bit lke the Booker Prize, sometimes the judges lean towards a body of work rather than the work in question. However, if the principle applies, Radiohead should have won for 1) making the best reocrd of their career, 2) for making the best record of the year, and 3) for their body of work

The thing is, sometimes you hear/see an artist and you're not quite sure what it is that's bugging you about them, and then you read a quote that cuts to the quick and says it all. You can't love everything, and when you've been through a couple of generations of revivals and reappraisals, you get a bit suspicious when someone is being touted as the next this or that. Perhaps I'm just bored and old. I can't stick British Sea Power either. They're like some kind of hideous gang show

You'll notice I used the phrase 'da streets' in jest John! Although I do think there has been a reluctance amongst some aspects of the press (not yourself) to dismiss the likes of Laura Marling, Noah & the Whale, Mystery Jets, etc because of their background, when actually they're making some of the most interesting 'indie' music of the moment. I think it's the inverse of why so many people were going on about Burial's dull, dull, dull record, which was proclaimed as 'the sound of urban life'

I've read about Warmer Milks somewhere. Some affiliation with Kentucky. Me thinks this is their website. That new record is golden indeed. http://tombstonegravy.blogspot.com

I remember when music journalism was mildly intelligent. Now it's just faux High Fidelity pretention drawing tedious links and comparisons. At least read the book rather than watching the film. I bet you've even had your list of top 5 albums laminated. Dolores O Riordan for Jack Penate fans the best rock journalism simile? Maybe go and listen to a bit of Bonnie Prince Billy and Richmond Fontaine mate.
