Even more on that ‘new’ Dylan album – plus ‘tracklisting’

2007-10-03 17:15:22

My recent post about what I’d heard via an email from someone calling himself Raul Spendliv has excited a lot of comment, a lot of people treating what I wrote, understandably, with some suspicion.

Continued...

More than a few correspondents wanted to know if what Raul had to say was actually true, while even more wanted to know, exactly, who this Raul actually is – although a couple of you seemed convinced it was an alias for Bob himself (I thought it sounded like a character from a Pynchon novel).

I don’t know the answer to either of those questions, but was intrigued enough by Raul’s message to pass on what he’d told me.

And while there were some blisteringly scornful dismissals of Raul’s email, I’ve had a few emails claiming to add more information about the alleged content of the unconfirmed album – which I’ll pass on here, without being able to vouch entirely for its veracity.

According to one visitor to my blog, the album Dylan’s said to have been working on includes a version of Loretta Lynn’s “You’re The Reason Our Kids Are Ugly”, something that clocks in at least the length of “Highlands”, the 17-minute epic that closed Time Out Of Mind”, another song with the unlikely title of “George, I Miss You, Man” and another called “To Build A Fire”.

Mr Frosty Mouth, meanwhile, claims to know the titles of up to 11 songs Dylan’s and has even provided a brief comment on the tracks. I again merely reprint it here, and make no claims for its accuracy. Be a hell of a thing if it was on the money, though.

Anyway, here’s Mr F Mouth’s tracklisting;

1 The Third On The Wire (‘a slow-burner, Bettye Lavette said to be on backing vox)
2 Hard Lines And Soft Rhymes (‘doo-wop style, well kinda’)
3 Went To The Well And Got The Bell (Blues For Elmore James) (‘Garth Hudson on synth!’)
4 What Angel Fell
5 Coming In From The Cold (‘said to be in the vein of ‘Lonesome Day Blues’, nothing to do with Bob Marley’)
6 Talkin’ the Killin’ Floor Blues (‘Garth on synth again!’)
7 The Prince And The Warden (‘feels like some old folk tune’)
8 Down The Deep River Blues (loud and rockin’, the lyrics mention Katie Melua! Holy shit!’)
9 Somebody In My Coat (But Not Me) (‘weary piano blues, in the vein of ‘Working Man’s Blues’)
10 My Bad Brain (‘a waltz! Incredibly funny’)
11 Waiting For The Train Not To Stop Here Anymore (‘nine-minutes plus, makes this the long and lonesome album-stopper we’ve grown used to, ain’t we?’)

If anybody’s got anything else to add, I’m all ears!

Allan Jones

mr f mouths titles seem too much like stuff thats been on the past two albums high water for charlie patton , name checking a female muse again, sounds like f mouth put this together himself, however the reports that bob had booked studio make some sense as he had a three day break

Baloney - Katie Melua follows Alicia Keys I suppose, Dylan's rarely that obvious. PS Whatever happened to UNCUT DVD? (And my piece on The April Fools?) Cheers!

The rumour factory has turned into a joke shop. This is hilarious - but I think they're trying to rise your skirt. The album formerly known as "Anchor" can now be officially called "Anchor with a W".

well now you are getting conflicting information re: song titles, how many tunes have been recorded, etc. so this simply confirms the obvious -- that this rumor is pure BS.

Beside the matter that Bob already recorded a song called "Loneseome day blues" and it should have nothing to do with Bob Dylan at this point, anyway all of these reminds me of the period when Stormy season title came out and titles like Apollo's love, or Abhram's altar, or The butcher's crew were among the others, so let's hope for the best because Time out of mind came out then...

The original story about Rick Rubin sounds plausible, and I think you should keep digging in that vein, but this new tracklisting from "F Mouth" is obviously bogus. It reads exactly like the kind of thing that bounces around Dylan-related chat sites every time a new album is afoot, or even rumored. In other words, people just make up this kind of thing, for whatever dark reasons, or perhaps simply from an excess of wishful thinking. But this one in particular is a very risible specimen, cobbled together from slightly changed bits and pieces from previous songs. It sounds like a 12-year-old put it together.

This is fantastic satire, and I wish people would recognize it for what it is. Come on, Garth on synth? And the clumsiness of the last song title? Funny because it almost resembles something I'd like to hear from Dylan, but expresses a weirdness which he has inside him but will never fully give voice to.

Sounds great but can't put any faith in it. Are we really to believe that he has already recorded these (as the content would imply given descriptions of what they sound like and comments on musicians)? The original rumour of booking studio time in Jan with Rick R at the helm sounds more plausible (although I still don't buy it-hope I'm wrong!)

Now looking at this, it is either a complete lie, or it is close to the truth. To come up with a tracklisting and the musicians, either someone is trying to fool us, or they know something we don't know. If it is true that Bob recorded an album, when did he do it? He's been pretty much constantly touring. It's feasible that he's written enough songs since Modern Times was recorded 2 years ago. But there were no rumours to my knowledge that he was in the studio. Only that he may record in the new year. And look at the long gap between Under the Red Sky (1990), Time Out of Mind (1997), Love and Theft (2001) and Modern Times (2006) - only 4 albums of original songs in the last 17 years. I think these reports are fake. But I believe the stuff that Bob will record next year with Rick Rubin

Garth on synth? Interesting that last week on Robert Elms show, Garth indicated that he hadn't actually seen Bob in years, refering to seeing someone from a distance who looked like Bob as being the most recent time he had 'seen him'. I suspect this 'album' is Snow Over Interstate 40 Revisited

Please do not let it be true until I have at least bought Modern Times & I am not looking fwd to that though my 78 year old mother swears it is the best thing he has ever done. However, I would love to hear Dylan do ANY Loretta song! That I can believe might happen with the Jack White connection though Bob and I woulda been hip to her long time 'fore Jack came 'round. "The only thing we knew for sure about Henry Porter was that his name wasn't Henry Porter..." Y'all chew on that a while.

There is a song by Joni Mitchell called Come In From The Cold, maybe that's it. Dylan did after all do Big Yellow Taxi all those years ago.

If you want imagined or rumoured lost albums, check out "The Road to Turkey Scratch" on The Band website (www.theband.hiof.no). This links to the article which caused great discussion circa 2001 … http://theband.hiof.no/articles/the_road_from_turkey_scratch. html

I agree that it's probably all nonsense, but it's cleverer nonsense than some are allowing. DD says "the alleged titles aren't even good titles. not even dylan-esque." Beg to differ, old chap. Prince and The Warden is so very Dylan - its a reference to the twe two main characters in Kafka's short story Der Gruftwächter. What could be more Bob-like? I mean, I don't think it is true, but it's a damn good spoof...

I say, with all the gusto I can muster, THERE IS NO NEW DYLAN ALBUM UNDERWAY! Why do you persist in perpetuating this arrant nonsense? Why do you continue to lend credence to people who are either fantasists or simply having skewed fun at your expense? Why do you so demean the publication you edit? Put simply, I trust my sources more than your sources. Get out there and do some real journalism on this one!

A friend of my cousins's next door neighbour's cleaning lady's vet claims that the vet said that he had treated Rick Rubin's accountant's sister's pen-friend's probation officer's guard dog and that Rick had let it slip that he saw a rumour on the internet that he'd made an album with Bob Dylan. Anyway at that stage he hadn't but he thought, hmmmm, maybe it would be a good idea to link up with a clapped out old singer-song-writer and put out a cheap accoustic album of other people's songs but then thought - nah - it would never sell.
